Gainesville, Fla. –Trai Willaims, 28, of Gainesville, Florida, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison after previously pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of carfentanil (an analogue of fentanyl) and other controlled substances. The sentence was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin said: “This drug trafficker’s days of flooding our streets with deadly poison are over, and the only thing he has to look forward to is a federal prison cell. Anyone caught peddling drugs in my district can expect aggressive prosecutions by my office and severe punishments.”

Court documents reflect that on October 2, 2025, the defendant fled from police through multiple counties reaching speeds in excess of 120 mph. During the pursuit, cocaine and other controlled substances were thrown from the vehicle. After the defendant’s vehicle was immobilized and the defendant was apprehended, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the defendant’s apartment in Gainesville. Inside the apartment were numerous controlled substances, including over 156 grams of carfentanil and other substances containing heroin, fentanyl, promethazine, codeine, cocaine, and over $55,000 in U.S. currency.

According to an Officer Safety Alert published by the Drug Enforcement Administration, carfentanil is a synthetic opioid originally developed to tranquilize large animals, such as elephants. The DEA estimates that it is 10,000 times more potent than morphine, and 100 times stronger than fentanyl.

Evidence at sentencing established that on June 24, 2024, the defendant sold counterfeit “pressed” pills containing fentanyl to Elijah Brantley, who sold them to an individual in Greencove Springs, Florida, who overdosed and died from the pills on June 25, 2024. Mr. Brantley has a pending charge for distribution of a controlled substance causing a death in the Middle District of Florida for which he is presumed innocent.

“Carfentanil and other powerful synthetic opioids pose a serious threat to our community,” said Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya. “This 25-year federal sentence sends a strong message that those who distribute these dangerous drugs will be held accountable.”

The case involved a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Gainesville Alachua County Drug Task Force with assistance from the sheriff’s offices in Alachua, Hamilton, Columbia, and Clay counties.
