Veterans and People With Disabilities

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is committed to hiring a highly talented and diverse workforce, including Veterans and people with disabilities.  We offer excellent benefits and opportunities for career advancement and jobs in the United States and abroad. DEA’s commitment includes having a dynamic employment strategic plan; issuing robust hiring goals, increasing the knowledge of disability-related and service-connected resources; and promoting training in disability awareness and reasonable accommodation.

VETERANS

DEA honors the sacrifice Veterans have made while serving our country.  Veterans have certain entitlements by law in competing for Federal civil service employment.

Federal Service Employment of Veterans:

  • Veterans' Preference: veterans who are disabled or who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during certain specified time periods or in military campaigns are entitled to preference over others in hiring from competitive lists of those eligible and also in retention during reductions in force.
  • Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) Authority: allows for appointment of eligible veterans without competition in positions up to the GS-11 level.
  • 30% or More Disabled Veteran Appointing Authority: allows for appointment of 30% or more disabled veterans without competition to various positions across DEA.
  • Veterans Employment Opportunity Act of 1998 (VEOA): allows veterans to apply to merit promotion (open to federal government) positions.
  • Noncompetitive Appointment of Certain Military Spouses:  allows spouses with proper documentation from the Department of Veterans Affairs to apply as a preference eligible.

Resources:

The following online resources are provided to help you understand veterans' preference, other hiring flexibilities, and offer additional resources available to veterans:

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Individuals with disabilities have much to contribute to our workplace and to accomplishing DEA’s mission as the world’s leading drug enforcement agency. People with disabilities serve in all of DEA’s mission-critical occupations and professional support positions.

DEA can appoint persons with disabilities to federal jobs non-competitively through a process called Schedule A (u). Interested applicants may submit their resume, along with other required documents, directly to the DEA Selective Placement Position Coordinator. SPPC Directory - Justice Department.  Individuals with disabilities may also apply for DEA employment opportunities through the traditional, or competitive process via USAJOBS, the federal government’s official jobs website.

For more information about employment of individuals with disabilities in the federal government and Schedule A (u) hiring authority including eligibility, please visit the Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Employment of People with Disabilities website. If you need a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application and/or questionnaire process, immediately notify the point of contact identified in the job announcement. Also please see the information below in the section “Reasonable Accommodations.”

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) provides reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities.  A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a job, the work environment, or the way things usually are done that enables a qualified individual with a disability to enjoy an equal employment opportunity.

Some of the accommodations available include:

  • TTYs for use with telephones
  • Hardware and software that make computers accessible if you have vision impairments or difficulty using your hands
  • Sign language interpreters, readers, and personal care attendants
  • Training and other written materials in an alternative format (e.g., Braille, audio tape, computer disk)
  • Physical changes, such as installing a ramp or modifying a workspace.
