Drug dealer peddling heroin and fentanyl to Virginia communities for years, causing numerous overdoses, sentenced to 13 years in prison today.

NORFOLK, Va. – Barry Jamel Alexander, 33, of Norfolk, was sentenced today to 13 years in prison for conspiring to distribute heroin.

Over the last five years, Alexander sold quantities of heroin in excess of two kilograms to customers on multiple occasions. Alexander sold heroin mixed with fentanyl to a customer who overdosed on the substance and had to be revived with Narcan, then continued to sell that heroin to undercover officers, knowing about the overdose.

“Alexander’s distribution of heroin and fentanyl in our Virginia communities carried grave consequences, causing drug overdoses, potentially ripping away the future of loved ones and leaving families devastated,“ said DEA Washington Division Special Agent in Charge Jesse R. Fong. “The investigation and prosecution of these drug-related crimes that so gravely affect our communities continues to be a top priority for the DEA Washington Division, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of those who spread this poison across our cities.”

According to court documents, Alexander, sold heroin mixed with fentanyl to an undercover police officer at a Norfolk 7-Eleven. He used his cousin as a middle man in an attempt to protect himself from criminal exposure, but the store security cameras caught him handing the drugs to his cousin and, soon after, receiving the drug money.

“Alexander sold deadly heroin-fentanyl cocktails that caused at least two victims to overdose,” said U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia G. Zachary Terwilliger. “This callous mindset will not be tolerated, especially from an individual with a criminal history like Alexander, which includes 30 previous convictions. This is a just sentence for someone who knowingly dumped this poison into our community.”

U.S. Attorney Terwilliger and Special Agent in Charge Fong made the announcement after sentencing by Senior U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith. Assistant U.S. Attorneys William B. Jackson and John F. Butler prosecuted the case.
