ROCKFORD, Ill. - On Thursday July 2, 2020, Robert J. Bell, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Chicago Division and Tricia Smith, State’s Attorney for Boone County, Illinois, announced that Efren Rodriguez-Diaz (Wheaton, Illinois) pled guilty to Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance before Judge C. Robert Tobin.  Rodriquez-Diaz was subsequently sentenced to 19 years incarceration in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC), followed by three years mandatory supervised release.

Roy Vazquez previously pled guilty to the same offense and was sentenced to 19 years incarceration on June 26, 2020.  Vazquez and Rodriguez-Diaz must serve at least 75 percent of their sentences with the IDOC.  The penalty range for the offense was 15 to 60 years incarceration.

On October 13, 2017, Roy Vazquez and Rodriquez-Diaz offered to sell two kilograms of cocaine to the DEA for $58,000.  Vazquez and Rodriguez-Diaz, arrived in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart store, 2101 Gateway Center Drive, Belvidere, to deliver the cocaine.  Once it was confirmed that the cocaine was in the car, agents and officers arrested both Vazquez and Rodriguez-Diaz.  The cocaine was sent to a crime lab, where it was confirmed to be cocaine, with a total weight of 2032 grams.  Agents and offices seized an additional 17 kilograms of cocaine and 4.5 kilograms of heroin, belonging to Vazquez and Rodriquez-Diaz, from a residence.

DEA is grateful for the collaborative efforts of the Belvidere Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Rockford Police Department, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, Crystal Lake Police Department, Wheaton Police Department, and the Boone County State’s Attorney’s Office.
