Fairfax County Man Pleads Guilty to Drug, Gambling Charges

AUG 5 -- (ALEXANDRIA, VA) -– Dwight F. Day, Jr., 45, of Fairfax Station, Virginia, pled guilty today to conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine and conspiracy to engage in an illegal gambling business. Chuck Rosenberg, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Shawn Johnson, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, Washington Field Office; C. Andre Martin, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation; and, Colonel David M. Rohrer, Chief of Police, Fairfax County Police Department, made the announcement after the guilty pleas before United States District Judge Liam O’Grady. Day will be sentenced before Judge O’Grady on October 24, 2008.

According to court documents, Day faces between 5 and 40 years in federal prison on the drug conviction and up to 5 years in prison on the gambling conviction. Day has also agreed to forfeit a total of more than $2,000,000 as part of his plea agreement. More than $1,000,000 in cash was seized by law enforcement between August 2007 and May 2008 during the investigation. According to court documents, Day bought and sold cocaine to friends and business associates from January 2006 through May 2008. From September 2005 through May 2008, Day also worked as a bookie in an illegal sports betting operation using an Internet website to accept bets. Day and another individual then collected gambling debts, and Day made repayments to a third person in amounts up to $180,000 cash at a time.

This case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Fairfax County Police Department, Internal Revenue Service, and Vienna Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel J. Grooms prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
