Cocaine And Fentanyl Distributor Indicted
BUFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. and Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt, U.S. Drug Enforcement (DEA), New York Division announced that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Luis Matias, of Buffalo, 27, with possessing with intent to distribute; and distributing, butyryl fentanyl and crack cocaine. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch, who is handling the case, stated that according to the indictment and a previously filed complaint, in July 2017, law enforcement officers developed information that the defendant was distributing large quantities of butyryl fentanyl in the Buffalo area. During the investigation, a confidential source and undercover officers were used to conduct controlled purchases from Matias.
The defendant was arraigned this morning before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder and is being detained.
The indictment is the culmination of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Buffalo Resident Office, New York Division; the New York State Police; and the Buffalo Police Department.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
