Traffic stop in Russell, Kansas leads to seizure of 60 pounds of fentanyl

ST. LOUIS - - James Shroba, Special Agent-in-Charge of DEA’s St. Louis Division announced today that DEA and the Kansas Highway Patrol worked together to successfully indict a Californian man for possession with intent to distribute approximately 60 pounds of fentanyl.

SAC Shroba was quoted as saying, “DEA and our state and local partners are committed to protecting our communities from the dangers of potent opioids, like fentanyl. This seizure alone prevented over 13.5 million lethal doses of this very potent and dangerous drug from hitting the streets.”

SAC Shroba advised that Carlos Fernando Fernandez-Gonzalez, 28, of Yucaipa, California, is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl resulting for a traffic stop that occurred on May 25, 2017, in Russell County, Kansas, conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Following that traffic stop, the Kansas Highway Patrol and DEA investigators worked together to bring the charge against Fernandez-Gonzalez.

This case was investigated by the DEA and the Kansas Highway Patrol.  The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas, Topeka Dockett, is prosecuting this case.
