MIAMI - Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. During Red Ribbon, young people in communities across the nation pledge to live drug free lifestyles by wearing red ribbons and participating in community-wide anti-drug events. Red Ribbon Week is also a time to pay tribute to Drug Enforcement (DEA) Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena, whose tragic murder led to the creation of the Red Ribbon Program. During Red Ribbon, we remember Special Agent Camarena’s ultimate sacrifice, and we join with communities across the nation in planning prevention efforts that encourage our youth to remain drug free and celebrating their drug free lifestyles.

“Red Ribbon week is the time to remember Special Agent Kiki Camarena and all men and women of law enforcement who have given their lives to keep our country safe from dangerous drugs. This week is also a time to remember the victims of drug abuse and to make a personal decision to be drug free for a healthy future,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Mark R. Trouville.

On October 25, 2012, the DEA Miami Field Division will host a Red Ribbon event at Brentwood Elementary School located at 3101 NW 191 st Street, Miami Gardens, Florida. This event will begin at 10a.m., and the children and faculty will be given a drug prevention presentation, history of Red Ribbon Week, and a K-9 demonstration.

Six years ago, the DEA Miami Field Division adopted Brentwood Elementary School. As part of our ongoing relationship with Brentwood, the DEA Miami Field Division has established a drug and violence prevention program. The past four years the Miami Red Ribbon main event has taken place at Brentwood.

Red Ribbon events will be held throughout Florida. For additional information about events in your area please contact Special Agent Mia Ro (954) 660-4602 or Special Agent Oscar Negron (954) 660-4594.
