Madison Man Sentenced To 151 Months On Heroin Charge
MADISON, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Paul W. Stewart, 33, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson to 151 months in federal prison for possession of heroin with intent to distribute. Stewart pleaded guilty to this charge on May 27, 2015.
On December 18, 2014, agents executed a search warrant at the defendant’s apartment on Britta Drive in Madison. During the execution of the search warrant, Stewart attempted to flee the scene. He was apprehended by agents outside the apartment building. Officers searched the area where they saw Stewart running and found a bag he had dropped which contained heroin. A total of 53 grams of heroin was recovered. A firearm, ammunition, several scales, and drug packaging materials also were found in the apartment.
Judge Peterson reasoned that the lengthy sentence was warranted due to Stewart’s extensive criminal history, including multiple felony drug convictions, and his status of being on state parole for the delivery of heroin at the time of his arrest in December 2014.
The charge against Stewart was the result of an investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Dane County Narcotics Task Force. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.
