New Haven Man Sentenced To Five Years In Federal Prison For Role In Drug Trafficking Ring
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kevin L. Lane, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration for New England and David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that LUIS ORTIZ, also known as “Big Nose,” 23, of New Haven, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford to 60 months of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release, for distributing narcotics in New Haven.
According to court documents and statements made in court, in April 2011, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the New Haven Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Unit, began an intensive investigation into drug dealing in the vicinity of 36 Maltby Place in the Fair Haven section of New Haven. The investigation, which included the use of court-authorized wiretaps, law enforcement surveillance, and controlled purchases of crack cocaine and cocaine from a number of individuals, revealed that ORTIZ was involved in selling crack cocaine and cocaine to drug customers and supplying the drugs to other members of a conspiracy who, in turn, sold the drugs to customers.
On July 9, 2012, ORTIZ pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine (“crack”) and quantities of cocaine.
This matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the New Haven Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Unit. The Stamford Police Department has provided critical assistance to the investigation.
