Nearly 14 tons collected in one day last month

CENTENNIAL, CO – The Drug Enforcement Administration's Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) has final totals following the most recent drug Take Back Day April 25, 2026.

Across the Division's four states (Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming) 157 law enforcement departments at 225 collection sites collected 27,590 pounds of unneeded, unwanted, and expired medications. Last October, RMFD collected 22,202 pounds.

April's Take Back generated an additional 5,388 pounds – 2.6+ tons – of medications across our four states compared to the last Take Back in October 2025.

"We're extremely thankful to people in our Rocky Mountain Division who took the time to get rid of their medications in the proper manner," said DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge David Olesky. "We're also very appreciative of our local and state partners who assist in the collection, preventing potential misuse or abuse of prescription medication."

Breakdown by state for collection April 25, 2026:

Utah: 70 departments with 108 sites – collected 13,626 lbs.

Colorado: 58 departments with 85 sites – collected 11,519 lbs.

Montana: 17 departments with 18 sites – collected 1,239 lbs.

Wyoming: 12 departments with 14 sites – collected 1,206 lbs.

Division totals: 157 departments with 225 sites – collected 27,590 lbs.

For comparison, Take Back October 2025:

Utah: 63 departments with 96 sites, collected 10,359 lbs.

Colorado: 51 departments with 76 sites, collected 9,302 lbs.

Wyoming: 15 departments with 17 sites, collected 1,433 lbs.

Montana: 17 departments with 14 sites, collected 1,108 lbs.

Division totals: 146 departments with 203 sites, collected 22,202 lbs.

Nationwide since 2010, DEA has collected more than 20 million pounds, ensuring proper disposal (incineration) instead of medications getting into landfills or water supplies.
