Timothy S. Flaherty
Chief Inspector (IG) Timothy S. Flaherty currently leads the Inspection Division. In this position, IG Flaherty protects the agency from risk and threats by setting strategy, leading programs, and steering audits/investigations that affect the organization’s people, facilities, operations, and reputation. IG Flaherty oversees four Senior Executive Service members responsible for the Office of Inspections (IN), Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), Office of Security Programs (IS), and Office of Compliance (AC). IG Flaherty serves as the principal adviser to the Administrator and Principal Deputy Administrator on all policy issues, analysis and evaluation of major program and organizational elements, and on all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) critical incidents or other reportable incidents.
IG Flaherty directed a sweeping transformation throughout the Inspection Division by leverage the analytical data to better assess performance, trends, and identify areas of risk. Prior to his assignment as the IG, IG Flaherty was the Deputy Chief Inspector (DCI) for IN where he created domestic based field inspection teams (Atlanta, Houston, Louisville, Chicago) to expand capabilities and better assist the field. Prior to his promotion to the Senior Executive Service, IG Flaherty was the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the New York Division and Long Island District Office, where he established the first Cyber Group and led a collaborative effort that resulted in the arrests of 250 MS-13 members worldwide and dismantled the East Coast Program of MS-13. Prior to the New York Division, IG Flaherty was assigned to the Office of Professional Responsibility, where he conducted and supervised employee, task force officer and contractor misconduct investigations. Prior to his HQ assignment, IG Flaherty was a Group Supervisor in the New York Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Strike Force and a Special Agent in the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force.
IG Flaherty graduated in 1997 from the Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Additional training includes the University of Virginia Senior Leader Program and the University of Notre Dame SES Leadership Development Program.
