LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- National Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s longest-running drug prevention program, kicks off today, Wednesday, October 23rd.  To mark the occasion, Louisville’s Big Four Bridge will be illuminated in red lights this evening.

“The Drug Enforcement Administration would like to thank the Waterfront Development Corporation for helping us raise awareness about substance abuse and honor the life and legacy of DEA Special Agent Kiki Camarena,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Erek Davodowich, head of DEA’s Louisville Division.

The Red Ribbon Campaign is dedicated to helping preserve the memory of Special Agent Camarena, a DEA special agent who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in Mexico by drug traffickers; and to further the cause for which he gave his life: the fight against the violence of drug crime and the misery of addiction.

Red Ribbon week is a time to remember those who have given their lives in the fight against dangerous drugs. The Red Ribbon is worn in tribute to their courage, and to ensure that their sacrifice was not made in vain. The Red Ribbon symbolizes our dedication to living healthy, drug-free lives.

By gathering at special events and wearing a Red Ribbon during the last week in October, Americans from all walks of life demonstrate their opposition to drugs.
