DENVER – The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) recognizes today, August 21, 2024 as National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

“We want to take this time to send our condolences to families across the country who have been impacted by deadly fentanyl – specifically those families within our Division to include the states of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana,” said DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen.

“We also want to acknowledge the importance of DEA’s mission and the commitment to keep our communities safe by working every day to seize deadly fentanyl. Too many families have been and continue to be devastated by this poison brought in by the cartels.”

In 2023, the CDC estimates more than 107,000 Americans died of a drug poisoning. Of that total, more than 70% of the cases involved fentanyl.

As little as 2 mg – the equivalent of just a few granules of sugar – can prove fatal.

DEA commends the groups, coalitions, and individual families who have taken up the fight against fentanyl on their own.

“We urge you to have the fentanyl discussion within your own family, circle of friends, and co-workers. Fentanyl remains the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 to 45,” Pullen added.
