Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is focused on saving American lives by defeating the cartels responsible for bringing fentanyl into our country.
The threat of fentanyl is deadlier and more pervasive than ever before.
When I joined DEA in 2021, DEA laboratory testing indicated 4 out of 10 pills contained a deadly dose of fentanyl. Last year, DEA saw a significant increase to 6 out of every 10 pills. Today, I share yet another increase – laboratory testing indicates 7 out of every 10 pills seized by DEA contain a lethal dose of fentanyl.
DEA has seized a record 62 million fentanyl pills to date in 2023, which already exceeds last year’s totals of 58 million pills.
In September, DEA hosted its second annual National Family Summit on Fentanyl. We were joined by almost 150 families who have lost loved ones. I committed to them that the men and women of DEA, along with our local and state partners, will continue our vital work. This includes providing the American people relevant and timely information.
