Dorchester Man Sentenced for Possession with the Intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine

JUN 9 -- Boston, MA... A Dorchester man was sentenced yesterday afternoon in federal court for Possession with the Intent to Distribute more than 5 grams of crack cocaine.

June W. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in New England and United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and, Kathleen O’Toole, Commissioner of the Boston Police Department, announced today that JAMAL CLARKE, age 24, of Dorchester, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns to more than 6 years’ imprisonment, to be followed by 4 years of supervised release. CLARKE pleaded guilty on January 11, 2005, to Possession with the Intent to Distribute more than 5 grams of crack cocaine.

At the earlier plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that, had the case proceeded to trial, the Government’s evidence would have proven that at about 3:30 a.m. on June 30, 2003, two Boston Police officers on patrol saw CLARKE make an illegal u-turn in his car and also ran a check of the plates and found that they were on a car to which they were not registered. After pulling over the car which he was driving, CLARKE provided police with false identification. Shortly thereafter, in conducting a pat-down of CLARKE, police felt a protrusion around his waistline, which they discovered was a plastic bag containing thirty-three smaller bags of crack cocaine. The total net weight was 5.22 grams.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Boston Police Department as part of the DEA’s Drug Task Force. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul R. Moore and Seth P. Berman in Sullivan’s Major Crimes Unit.
