Mr. William J. Callahan, III, was appointed to the position of Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the St. Louis Division in May 2018. SAC Callahan oversees the DEA’s enforcement, intelligence, administrative and regulatory activities throughout Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Southern Illinois. The St. Louis Division is comprised of 18 offices and more than 500 Special Agents, Diversion Investigators, Intelligence Analysts, Task Force Officers, professional staff and contractors.
Mr. Callahan joined DEA in February 2000 and served in numerous leadership capacities throughout his distinguished career. Upon graduation from the DEA Academy, Mr. Callahan served as a Special Agent in the New York Division. In 2003, Mr. Callahan was transferred to the newly established New York Organized Crime Drug Enforcement (OCDETF) Strike Force. In 2014, Mr. Callahan established the New York Division’s Financial Investigations Team (FIT). After eight years as a Special Agent, Mr. Callahan promoted to Group Supervisor, in the New York Division, where he oversaw complex international money laundering, narcotic, and violent domestic gang investigations. As a supervisor, Mr. Callahan oversaw the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Domestic Highway Enforcement (DHE) program and worked closely with the New York High Intensity Financial Crime Area program. Mr. Callahan partnered with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY) to establish the EDNY Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) review committee, and served as co-chair of the New York External Fraud Committee, an ad-hoc committee consisting of law enforcement and the financial community combating financial crimes and fraud.
In June 2014, Mr. Callahan was reassigned to DEA Headquarter (HQ) in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Callahan served in administrative and enforcement roles while assigned to DEA HQ. Upon reassignment to DEA HQ, Mr. Callahan was assigned to the Inspection Division and served in the Office of Inspections, where he participated in on-site division inspections, shooting reviews, and Attorney General Exempted Operations (AGEO) audits. In March 2015, Mr. Callahan transferred to the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) where he conducted internal investigations of allegations of employee misconduct.
In 2016, Mr. Callahan was promoted to Section Chief assigned to the Office of Global Enforcement (OE) Latin America and Caribbean Section (OGL), in which he supported enforcement operations and administrative matters in the Caribbean and Andean Region. Callahan’s leadership was instrumental as he directed a multi-agency delegation to Havana, Cuba to establish anti-narcotic collaborative efforts with the Government of Cuba.
In March 2017, Mr. Callahan returned to the Office of Inspections to create the AGEO Audit and Review Team.
In October 2017, Mr. Callahan was reassigned to the New York Division, as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Administration and Operational Support Unit. In this role, Mr. Callahan oversaw a multi-million dollar budget, purchasing, and technical operational support for the New York Division prior to his appointment to Special Agent in Charge of the St. Louis Division.
SAC Callahan is a native of New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Administration of Justice and Political Science from Rutgers University and a Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
