DEA Lends Support to 9th Annual Detroit Substance Abuse Summit

Detroit, Michigan- The Empowerment Zone Coalition recently held its 9th Annual Substance Abuse Summit at the Cobo Hall Convention Center in Detroit. The Empowerment Zone Coalition brought together many different groups and speakers that have a stake in reducing substance abuse and related social issues. Speakers and panel members represented law enforcement, substance abuse treatment and awareness professionals, government officials and neighborhood leaders.

Numerous workshops were presented on topics including drugs and homeland security, northern border security, building neighborhood coalitions and communicating with law enforcement. DEA Detroit Special Agent in Charge John P. Gilbride chaired a panel on the “Multi-Jurisdictional Approach to Prevention, Treatment, and Law Enforcement of Drug Sales, Drug Abuse and Public Safety.” Demand Reduction Coordinator Richard Isaacson also participated on a panel discussion covering the recent referendum in the City of Detroit regarding Medical Marijuana.
