U.S. District Court Interns Receive Introduction to DEA

Interns receive briefing at DEA - Detroit.

Detroit, MI- On July 8, 2003, 28 law school interns working for U.S. District Court Judges in Detroit received an overview of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its operations in Detroit. The interns represented law schools throughout Michigan and Northern Ohio working as law clerks for the federal judges in Detroit. At the request of U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman, the DEA Detroit hosted the interns for a day to inform them on federal narcotics enforcement programs and give them an opportunity to ask questions about regional and global drug issues.

Interns take their turn on "Shoot, Don't Shoot" scenarios.

During the three-hour presentation, the visitors received an overview of DEA Intelligence, Enforcement Goals, Diversion, Forensic Sciences, Recruiting and Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement. The interns were also provided the opportunity to utilize the Firearms Automated Training System (FATS), which is commonly referred to as a "shoot/don't shoot" simulator.

The Honorable Judge Bernard Friedman advised SAC Braun, "I can tell you without hesitation that all the participants were very impressed with your agency [DEA] and its mission." The DEA Detroit office has always had a positive working relationship with the members of the U.S. District Court staff and they have always reciprocated in kind.
