SAC Michael A. Braun Hosts Forum for Heads of Local Law Enforcement
June 4-Detroit, MI - Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Michael Braun of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Detroit Division hosted an executive forum on international and domestic drug trafficking trends for chiefs of police and sheriffs from law enforcement agencies throughout southeast Michigan. The forum, which was attended by over fifty law enforcement executives, placed an emphasis on the importance of intelligence sharing and the benefits that both local law enforcement and the DEA can derive from the sharing of information and mutual cooperation.
Mr. Steven Casteel, DEA's Deputy Administrator for Intelligence, provided a thorough presentation on international drug trafficking trends and its impact on Michigan. Additionally, Mr. Casteel's presentation focused on the very real link between narcotics trafficking and terrorism. Mr. Casteel stated that many of the terrorist organizations identified by the U.S. Department of State have direct connections with narcotics trafficking organizations.
DEA Program Analyst Maureen Bory presented information on the movement to legalize illicit drugs in America. Ms. Bory made a very interesting point noting that all of the states that have passed "medical marijuana" initiatives are now showing the highest illegal drug user rates in the country.
The law enforcement executives were also briefed on the methamphetamine problem sweeping across the United States and the need for Michigan law enforcement agencies to prepare for it.
The executives were also given an overview on the extensive training DEA offers to all of the state and local law enforcement officers throughout the United States.
SAC Braun hopes to offer these types of programs regularly with the emphasis on continued mutual cooperation.
