International Counterparts Look to Drug
Enforcement Administration for Leadership

DEA Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey D. Sweetin will host an International Forum for foreign Drug Enforcement Counterparts on Friday, June 6, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Rocky Mountain Division Office located at 115 Inverness Drive East, Englewood, Colorado. Delegates from seven countries including Jamaica, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Zambia will be attending. The forum is designed specifically for participants who are law enforcement officials, government officials, policy advisors, healthcare providers, policy-makers, business and civic leaders and others who are affected by counter-narcotics activities.

"The scope of illegal drugs knows no boundaries culturally or monetarily and crosses international lines. Our aim is to share the successes we have enjoyed as a nation with others who look to the United States as a model that works," said Special Agent in Charge Sweetin.

The goal of this project is to provide an overview of the United States' response to the use of illegal drugs, including education and treatment strategies at the federal, state and local levels. Participants will gain a better understanding of the magnitude and severity of the global problem of illegal drugs use and abuse, how it adversely affects all societies, and to share successful strategies in confronting the problem.

In addition, the project will focus on diversion control programs, legislation mandating minimum sentencing guidelines for drug offenders, programs to combat international narcotics, technical and other U.S. Government assistance to countries and interagency and international cooperation.
