Retired DEA Agent Wins South Carolina's
Highest Civilian Volunteer Award

JUN 6—In April 2003, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford presented retired DEA Special Agent in Charge Lawrence McElynn with the Order of the Silver Crescent Award, South Carolina's highest civilian volunteer award.

Lawrence McElynn retired from the DEA after a distinguished 30-year career. McElynn, staying true to DEA's mission, began to address the problems of drug use and abuse through prevention efforts within South Carolina's school system. In 2001, McElynn was recognized, by then Governor James Hodges, as a "Community Hero." In 2002, McElynn's efforts and dedication were recognized by South Carolina Department of Education when he was awarded the "Palmetto Serves" award for his significant contributions to schools within the state of South Carolina. In 2002, State Superintendent of Education, Inez Tenenbaum said, "Lawrence McElynn is a great example of the many South Carolinians who are improving the lives of our students." Moreover Tenenbaum said, of McElynn, "these citizens give unselfishly of their time and talent to our young people, and they are making a positive impact on the future leaders of this state." Now in 2003, McElynn has been recognized again, this time by South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, with the Order of the Silver Crescent Award. During 2003, McElynn presented to over 1000 students attending several area High Schools, and 500 parents and community members. The nomination stated that McElynn spoke to several civic groups such as the Rotary, Kiwanis, PTA, Chamber of Commerce, and church groups. In April, Governor Sanford said of McElynn, "by raising awareness of the danger of the use and abuse of illegal drugs, you have improved the lives of countless individuals."

McElynn remains committed to improving the lives of thousands of kids in the South Carolina area. His efforts and selfless dedication serve as an example for countless others. Furthermore, his life and mission prove to us all…that one man can make a difference.
