Methamphetamine Trafficker Sentenced
MAY
13 -- (Indianapolis) – Edward
N. Schafer, 29, Silver Lake, Indiana, was
sentenced to 120 months imprisonment late
yesterday by U.S. District Judge Larry
J. McKinney. The sentencing follows Schafer’s
guilty plea to distribution of methamphetamine.
The case was the result of a month-long
investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration,
Indiana State Police, and Vincennes Police
Department.
On
August 17, 2007, Schafer delivered approximately
one pound of methamphetamine to a DEA informant
at a fast food restaurant along Highway 41
in Westfield, Indiana. Schafer had previously
come under law enforcement scrutiny during
a 2002 DEA investigation into the Diablos
Motorcycle Gang. The Diablos were responsible
for distributing approximately 600 pounds
methamphetamine in western Indiana from February
2001 through June 26, 2002. According to
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley Blackington
who prosecuted the case, Schafer had been
identified in the Diablos investigation as
a secondary source of methamphetamine for
the drug organization.
“The
distribution of methamphetamine is the distribution
of poison,” stated Gary G. Olenkiewicz,
DEA’s Special Agent in Charge of the
Chicago Field Division. “Mr. Schafer’s
prosecution and sentencing is evidence of
a successful drug law enforcement partnership
between the U.S. Attorney’s Office,
DEA, the Indiana State Police and Vincennes
Police Department. We are all committed to
cleaning out the poison in our communities.”
Judge
McKinney also imposed five years supervised
release following Schafer’s release
from imprisonment. During the period of supervised
release, Schafer will be subjected to random
urinalysis and random searches of his person,
vehicle, and residence.
