Passing of DEA New Jersey Special Agent in Charge Anthony D. Cammarato

photo-Anthony CammaratoWith deepest regret DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson announces the passing of Newark Division Special Agent in Charge Anthony D. Cammarato. He was born on February 17, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. After a year long battle with cancer, Mr. Cammarato died on Wednesday, January 8, 2003.

Mr. Cammarato was a Vietnam veteran who served with honor in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969. In 1970, he joined the New York City Police Department and was assigned to the 23rd Precinct in Harlem until 1976. From 1976 until 1980 he served as a Detective Sergeant with the Coral Springs, Florida Police Department.

In 1980 Mr. Cammarato started his career with the Drug Enforcement Administration as a Special Agent assigned to DEA's Fort Lauderdale, Florida office. At that time South Florida was the focal point of drug trafficking in the United States and Mr. Cammarato conducted investigations on Colombian Cartels.

From 1987 to 1989 Mr. Cammarato served in DEA's office in Bangkok, Thailand. During this time he conducted international investigations targeting opium and heroin drug trafficking organizations operating in the infamous Golden Triangle.

In 1989 Mr. Cammarato returned to the United States and began his first tour of duty in the Newark DEA office after receiving a promotion to Group Supervisor. Mr. Cammarato served as supervisor of an enforcement group and later supervised the office's Financial Investigations Unit until his transfer to DEA Headquarters in Washington D.C. in 1994.

While assigned to DEA Headquarters, Mr. Cammarato served in DEA's Office of Inspections before being promoted to Executive Assistant to the Chief of Operations. In 1992he was chosen to head DEA's office in Baltimore.

Mr. Cammarato was promoted to the Senior Executive Service in 1998. At that time, he relocated to the DEA New York Division where he was the Associate Special Agent in Charge, leading thirty-four enforcement groups.

In 2002 Mr. Cammarato was selected to serve as Special Agent in Charge of the Newark Division. The office encompasses the entire state of New Jersey, with offices in Newark, Atlantic City, Camden and Patterson.

As Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Cammarato's goal was to foster and nurture outstanding working relationships with all law enforcement in the state of New Jersey. He successfully forged these partnerships with his counterparts at the federal, state and local level through Mobile Enforcement Teams, and various task forces to continually improve the quality of life in New Jersey.

Mr. Cammarato attended John Jay College in New York and graduated from Nova University in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Patricia.
