In June 2018, Mr. Walsh was appointed as Director/Special Agent in Charge of the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) located on Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas. As Director/Special Agent in Charge, Director Walsh oversees all aspects of the EPIC Intelligence Enterprise. EPIC is a DEA led, Multi–Agency Intelligence Center (21 Participating Agencies) providing tactical, operational, and strategic intelligence support to federal, state, local, tribal and international law enforcement agencies. EPIC provides direct and immediate support to Law Enforcement throughout the United States relative to criminal organizations responsible for illegal activities within the Western Hemisphere with an emphasis on the Southwest border and Mexico and particular focus on crimes committed within the United States. EPIC’s mission is broadly focused on “all threats” to include illegal drugs, weapons trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, human smuggling, illegal migration, money laundering and bulk cash smuggling.
Director Walsh entered in to the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1990 and graduated number one in his Basic Agent Training Academy Class. Mr. Walsh was initially assigned to the Newark, NJ Field Division for several months before reporting to his initial post of duty as a field agent in the Tampa District Office (Florida Gulf Coast Region), where he spent eight years investigating large scale narcotics trafficking organizations throughout the United States and various foreign countries. In 1999, Mr. Walsh was assigned to the DEA Training Academy at the U.S. Marines Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia where he spent two years as an instructor in the DEA Leadership and Executive Development Unit.
In 2001, Director Walsh was promoted to the Chief of Leadership and Executive Development at the DEA Training Academy where he supervised a large staff comprised of DEA Agents and State/Local Executives. Director Walsh’s staff was responsible for overseeing the research, development, and delivering of executive development training for DEA and State, Local, and Federal counterparts throughout the United States.
In 2004, Director Walsh was assigned to the Rocky Mountain Division Office (Denver, Colorado) and served as the Supervisory Special Agent in Charge of the Rocky Mountain Interdiction/Heroin Task Force. Director Walsh was responsible for the Rocky Mountain Transportation Interdiction Program, Bulk Currency Initiative and Heroin Initiative throughout the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah, to include Native American Reservations throughout the region. Director Walsh and his task force personnel were all tactically certified “Operators” and Director Walsh served as the Commander of the Rocky Mountain Region DEA Special Response/Assistance Team (SWAT).
In 2008, Director Walsh was promoted to the Executive Assistant to DEA’s Assistant Administrator/Chief of Intelligence at DEA Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Director. Walsh was responsible for the initiation, implementation and oversight of a variety of executive level special studies and projects of particular interest to the Office of the Assistant Administrator and the DEA Global Intelligence Enterprise. Director Walsh served as the primary advisor to the Chief of Intelligence in functional areas requiring high level review (to include United States National Security Interests), criminal investigation, management and oversight of a 130 million dollar budget, 1,200 person staff, and direct interaction with the highest levels of law enforcement executive personnel, Intelligence Community executive staff, and U.S. Military and Political/U.S. Government officials (The Office of the President, United States Congress and the Pentagon).
In 2010, Director Walsh was assigned to the Miami Field Division as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge and assumed command of the Orlando District Office-Central Florida Region. Director Walsh remained in this position until his promotion to the Senior Executive Service position of SAC/Director of EPIC.
A native of Belleville, New Jersey, Director Walsh earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey and has completed executive development courses/programs at various Universities to include Notre Dame, Harvard University, US Naval Post Graduate School, University of Virginia, James Madison University, and Duke University. Director Walsh is married and has two daughters.
