O'Fallon Man Pleads Guilty in Heroin Overdose Death

FEB 10 - (EAST ST. LOUIS, IL) - A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced that RYAN W. ASSELIN, age 24, of O’Fallon, Illinois, pled guilty on February 10, 2010, in United States District Court in East St. Louis, Illinois, to a federal indictment charging him with Distribution of Heroin Resulting in Death. ASSELIN’S sentencing hearing is currently scheduled for May 14, 2010, at 2:30 p.m.

At his change-of-plea hearing, ASSELIN admitted providing the heroin which caused the death of a resident of O’Fallon, Illinois, on October 5, 2009.

At his sentencing hearing, ASSELIN faces a statutory minimum sentence of 20 years
imprisonment and a maximum of life imprisonment, a term of not less than 3 years’ supervised release, and a fine not to exceed $1,000,000.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the O’Fallon Police Department, and the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (MEGSI).

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison.
