DEA Cleans Up the Streets to Keep the
Kids Safe in Buffalo and Hamburg, NY

FEB 16--John P. Gilbride, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration New York Field Division and Kathleen Mehltretter, the Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of New York, announced the arrests of thirteen individuals charged with Title 21 United States Code 841 (a) (1), illegal Distribution of a Controlled Substance and Title 21 United States Code 846, Conspiracy to Distribute Controlled Substances.

On February 16, 2006, Special Agents and Diversion Investigators from the Buffalo, New York Office of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Veterans Administration Inspector General’s Office, Secret Service, along with Detectives from the Hamburg PD, Lackawanna PD, Blasdell PD, Buffalo PD and Erie County Sheriff’s Office, executed thirteen (13) Federal Arrest Warrants and two (2) Federal Search Warrants in the Buffalo and Hamburg areas. The following individuals were arrested:

The arrests were based on an investigation being conducted by the DEA, Veterans Administration IG’s Office, New York State Department of Health Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, Hamburg PD, and Evans PD into the illegal distribution of controlled substances including OxyContin, fentanyl patches, hydrocodone tablets, heroin and cocaine.

All of the drugs, with the exception of heroin and cocaine, are legitimately manufactured by US pharmaceutical companies for pain management. The investigation revealed that these drugs were diverted from legitimate sources for illegal distribution and recreational use.

Special Agent in Charge John P. Gilbride stated, “ DEA is committed to investigating drug trafficking organizations whose reach extends from the inner city to suburban communities. Along with our Federal, state and local partners we will investigate and bring to justice those individuals responsible for supplying our children with poison". SAC Gilbride praised the investigative efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Buffalo Resident Office, the Veterans Administration IG’s Office, New York State Department of Health Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, Hamburg Police Department, and Evans Police Department.

All of the defendants will be arraigned before Magistrate Judge Hugh B. Scott. Prosecution of this matter is being conducted by the US Attorney’s Office, Western District of New York with the assistance of the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

This investigation is being directed by Resident Agent in Charge, Nancy M. Cote’ of DEA’s Buffalo Resident Office.
