Plant City Methamphetamine Dealer Gets Life in Prison

March 15 (Tampa, FL) – Mark R. Trouville, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, Miami Field Division, and U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill announces that U.S. District Judge James S. Moody, Jr., has sentenced Darrin Joseph Hoffman (44, Plant City) to life in federal prison for trafficking in methamphetamine. The court also sentenced his co-conspirators, Maico Carbajal (22, Plant City) to a term of 138 months in federal prison for conspiracy to traffic in methamphetamine and possession of a firearm during and in relation to his drug trafficking crimes, and Aaron Carbajal (25, Plant City) to 57 months in federal prison for conspiracy to traffic in methamphetamine. As part of their sentences, the court also entered a money judgment against Maico and Aaron Carbajal, in the amount of $10,500, the proceeds of their drug trafficking crimes.

Darrin Joseph Hoffman was found guilty by a jury on November 30, 2011, of one count of conspiracy to traffic in methamphetamine and three counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Hoffman's life sentence was mandatory based on his having at least two prior felony drug convictions. Maico and Aaron Carbajal both pleaded guilty on November 21, 2011.

According to court documents, from at least early 2010 through June of 2011, Maico Carbajal, at times assisted by his cousin (Aaron Carbajal) distributed multiple ounce quantities of methamphetamine in and around the Plant City area. From December 2010, through April 2011, a confidential source working for the Drug Enforcement Administration made several controlled purchases from the Carbajals. When search warrants were executed at the residences of the Carbajals, in July of 2011, numerous drug ledgers were seized reflecting that Hoffman was a customer of Maico Carbajal. Meanwhile, a confidential source working for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office had made controlled purchases from Hoffman at Hoffman's residence on Turkey Creek Road, in Plant City. A search warrant was executed at Hoffman's residence on July 15, 2011. Hidden in a ceiling tile of Hoffman's bedroom was approximately 46 grams of methamphetamine. After his arrest, Hoffman admitted that he had been purchasing one to two ounces of methamphetamine from Maico Carbajal over the past year.

This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
