OCT 26 - (LAS VEGAS) – The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Las Vegas District Office is partnering with Nevada Child Seekers in a multi-agency effort to encourage the community to take a visible stand against drugs by bringing the 25 th Annual Red Ribbon Week to the Clark County School District. This national campaign runs from Saturday, October 23, 2010 and will end Sunday, October 31, 2010.
“Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to helping preserve Special Agent Camarena’s memory and further the cause for which he gave his life, the fight against the violence of drug crime and the misery of addiction,” said DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Paul A. Rozario. “DEA will continue doing all we can to protect our communities from drug traffickers. We are proud to join Nevada Child Seekers as we gather with children, families and schools in our communities to take a stand against drugs.”
Throughout the week, the DEA will travel to various elementary and middle schools to deliver their drug abuse awareness presentation called “Operation Drug-Free”. These presentations will consist of drug awareness education while also providing students with confidence and skills on how to say no to drugs.
In addition, the special delivery of “Operation Drug-Free” will also include Las Vegas Metro and Nevada Highway Patrol K-9 Narcotics Dog demonstrations, participation from Henderson SWAT, DEA vehicles and tactical equipment displays, and WestCare client testimonials. Students will also be given special red ribbons to signify the importance of the week along with discounted tickets to see the Las Vegas Wranglers Hockey Team. During Red Ribbon Week, the DEA and Nevada Child Seekers will reach approximately 4,170 students in the Clark County School District with “Operation Drug-Free”.
The National Red Ribbon Campaign is the nation’s largest campaign focusing on drug prevention. This campaign is held to honor the memory of Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena who was kidnapped, tortured, and brutally murdered by Mexican drug traffickers in March of 1985. Special Agent Camarena gave his life for the ongoing fight and terror of drug trafficking, and by uniting together during Red Ribbon Week and wearing the special red ribbons; the community is proudly displaying their opposition to drugs.
