DEA Chicago Field Division to Promote Meth Awareness
Media Events Planned in Midwest Cities
NOV 27 -- (Chicago) – The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA Chicago Field Division will join several federal, state and local agencies to promote National Methamphetamine Awareness Day on November 30, 2006.
“The dramatic spread of methamphetamine across the country during the 1990’s and to the present, particularly in the Midwest, has caused great concern for law enforcement and the public,” states Gary G. Olenkiewicz, DEA’s Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Division. “Meth Awareness Day is an opportunity for members of the media and public to gain a better understanding of the scope of the problem, the dangers associated with methamphetamine abuse, addiction, and trafficking, as well as law enforcement’s response to this issue.”
The following specific events are planned in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Minnesota for National Methamphetamine Awareness Day on November 30 th.
Event:Media Briefing – A briefing for members of the media on the dangers of methamphetamine, followed by an opportunity to video a mock clandestine laboratory set-up and law enforcement’s response/safety equipment. Following the briefing, representatives from the DOJ, DEA and Wisconsin DCI will be available for on-camera interview regarding methamphetamine topics. Note: The briefing will be informational only – no cameras or taping will be permitted during that portion of the program.
