Dominican Republic’s President Solidifies His Anti-Drugs Efforts with DEA

SEP 30 (SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic) – During the last week of September, the President of the Dominican Republic (DR), Danilo Medina met with the Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Caribbean Division, Matthew G. Donahue; the United States Ambassador James W. Brewster; the Dominican National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) Vice-admiral Edmundo Felix; and other anti-drug agency representatives from various points in the U.S. and Central America.  Also present were other DEA leadership representatives from several domestic offices.

The meeting was described as being very productive, and according to the DNCD Vice-admiral Felix, "It reaffirms the commitment of the Dominican Republic in the effort against drug trafficking as a way to fight along with allied countries this scourge that affects us all."

U.S. Ambassador Brewster said there were challenges represented by the use and trafficking of fentanyl and heroin transiting the area. Yet the United States and Dominican Republic will continue to strengthen their joint efforts against drug trafficking.  New strategies were discussed to fight the drug cartels in this joint battle.

SAC Donahue was grateful for President Medina’s assistance and indicated that the meeting was very productive in strengthening the partnership between the two countries. As SAC Donahue stated during a press interview, “We understand that we will work together in a closer fight against drug trafficking.”
