East Hartford Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Cocaine Distribution Charges

MAY 2 -- June W. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in New England and Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that ARTAN ISUFAJ, also known as “Tony,” “Ton,” and “T,” 27, of East Hartford, pleaded guilty yesterday, May 1, before United States District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford to one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute, and to distribute, 500 grams or more of cocaine.

The charges against ISUFAJ stem from separate investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force and a Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, each of which included the use of a variety of investigative techniques including controlled purchases of narcotics, court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance, and the execution of search and seizure warrants. The investigations have resulted in the indictment of approximately 50 defendants on federal narcotics and firearms charges, as well as the seizure of firearms, cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, narcotics paraphernalia, approximately $100,000 in cash, and vehicles utilized in furtherance of drug trafficking activities.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, from January 2006 to March 2007, ISUFAJ unlawfully conspired with others to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine. ISUFAJ was intercepted on numerous occasions over court-authorized wiretaps negotiating the sale of cocaine.

ISUFAJ is scheduled to be sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Alfred V. Covello on July 22, 2008, at which time ISUFAJ faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years and a fine of up to $2,000,000.

Acting U.S. Attorney Dannehy commended the investigation of this matter that was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Hartford Police Department, the East Hartford Police Department, Manchester Police Department, Southington Police Department, and the Windsor Locks Police Department.
