Numerous
local and national speakers assisted in this project along with DEA's
Office
of Diversion and Demand Reduction section. Assistant
Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) William Leonard of the El Paso Division
challenged attendee's to take the awareness, and education obtained from
their participation and turn-it into ACTION by training others. As a
result of this El Paso conference, additional community leaders have
pledge their support and expressed their desire to participant in DEA's
2nd annual "Race for the Ribbon," this October.
On April 25, in Albuquerque, New Mexico the New Mexico Activities Association
in conjunction with the DEA hosted a Steroid Summit for Athletic Directors,
Coaches, and Teachers throughout the entire state. New Mexico Governor,
Bill Richardson addressed the audience of approximately 200 leaders and
pledged $330,000 to support random student drug testing for steroids
in public schools. The Governor also announced the creation of an advisory
board to offer prevention, enforcement, and treatment strategies for
the emerging steroid problem.

ASAC, Robert Hartman
of the Albuquerque District Office welcomed the audience and reminded
state
leaders that steroids and the ancillary drugs
associated with steroids were "performance destructive drugs," and
asked attendee's to spread that message to students throughout the entire
state. The summit featured the Secretary of Education, Dr. Veronica Garcia,
Jerry Diehl (National Federation of State High School Associations),
Rick Dye (Former NFL player/steroid user), Don Hooton (Taylor Hooton
Foundation/son committed suicide as a result of steroid use), and Doug
Coleman, Supervisory Special Agent, Dangerous Drugs and Chemicals Section,
HQ's DEA.
As a result of this summit, collateral Demand Reduction Coordinator
(Finn Selander) will be attending meetings with the Governors' advisory
board and assisting the state leaders to develop a prevention plan involving
steroid education in public schools. In addition, additional Teens in
Prevention Regional Chapters will be expanded throughout New Mexico that
offer a youth-driven, community based solution to community drug problems.
