Thirty-Four Defendants Indicted In Griffin Georgia Drug Ring
MAY 2 -- (Griffin, GA) – Rodney G. Benson, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Field Division and Scott L. Ballard, District Attorney for the Griffin Judicial Circuit, announced the indictment of thirty-four defendants that were part of a Griffin-based drug trafficking organization. This organization was led by Craig WOODS, who is indigenous to the Griffin, GA. area, but resides in McDonough, GA.
Rodney G. Benson, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Field Division commented, “All participating agencies played a crucial role in the eradication of this criminal network. Their drug trafficking activities posed a significant threat to the quality of life in the Griffin community. The dismantling of this organization makes the Griffin community a safer place today. I want to thank our federal, state and local law enforcement counterparts who had a direct impact in making this investigation a success.”
According to SAC Benson, the Metropolitan Atlanta High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force, the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, and the Griffin Police Department, conducted an extensive year-long narcotics investigation. In early 2007, WOODS was identified as a major drug distributor in the Griffin, Spalding County area. WOODS was the alleged ring-leader of this organization, which distributed cocaine base (crack), powder cocaine and marijuana.
Through various investigative measures, to include a number of undercover drug buys, 33 additional members of this organization were identified during the first nine months of the investigation. From February to April, 2008, 14 case-related drug search warrants throughout Griffin and Spalding County yielded approximately $100,000.00 of US Currency, over 27 ounces of cocaine, over 5 pounds of marijuana and numerous illegal firearms.
Local police added that WOODS is a small town drug lord. WOODS’ drug organization made a big impact by establishing Flop-houses and drug sale housing locations, setting up "Open Air" retail drug operations, dividing drug sale geographic locations, and controlling collection and distribution of drug proceeds. WOODS took advantage of the distressed economic conditions in Griffin, Georgia and systematically organized a successful drug operation. WOODS and his underling, David HAYES, were known to brag about drug earnings in excess of $10,000 per week. Sources say WOODS and HAYES wanted to establish a thriving drug business and retire.
On April 29, 2008, a total of 34 defendants, all part of WOODS’ organization, were indicted by a Grand Jury in Spalding County. Agents code named the investigation against WOODS and others as “Operation Control-Alt-Delete.” Four of the indicted defendants remain at-large.
